When brain surgery becomes necessary, one common fear is cumbersome travel to a major metropolitan medical center far from home. At Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital, that assumption is being rewritten- one breakthrough at a time.
Since July 2024, Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital, in partnership with the Medical College of Wisconsin, has been developing a comprehensive neurosurgical program that rivals those found in major cities. Leading this effort is a team of highly specialized neurosurgeons: Dr. Hirad Hedayat, Dr. Ahmed Cheema, and Dr. Shekar Kurpad- each bringing extraordinary expertise and a shared commitment to providing exceptional care to patients close to home.
Investment in Advancements
One of the many recent advancements at Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital is the opening of a state-of-the-art angiogram suite in the Schmidt Surgery Center. Similar to the cardiac catheterization lab, this specialized room is equipped with leading-edge technology that enables the team to perform minimally invasive treatments for some of the most complex and life-threatening neurological conditions, including brain aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), and intracranial hemorrhages (bleeding in or on the brain).

“Since the Medical College of Wisconsin neurosurgery team began working at Froedtert South, we have expanded our services to provide comprehensive neurovascular care,” said Dr. Hirad Hedayat, Neurosurgeon, Associate Professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin, and the Chief of Vascular Neurosciences. “This new, highly specialized room and equipment allow us to complete the entire treatment right here. Our patients no longer need to travel elsewhere to receive high-level, high-quality neurosurgical care.”
Ahmed Cheema, M.D. Neurosurgeon
The angiogram suite enables Dr. Hedayat and Dr. Ahmed Cheema, Neurosurgeon, both of whom hold additional subspecialty training in cerebrovascular and endovascular neurosurgery, to offer patients a comprehensive range of treatment options for these complex conditions. Dr. Hedayat also performs cerebral bypass procedures, a rare and highly complex surgery used to restore blood flow to the brain in patients with severe stenosis or blood vessel narrowing.
Dr. Hedayat explains, “When the brain isn’t receiving adequate blood flow and nourishment to function at the level it needs, this surgery can be life altering as well as lifesaving. It represents one of the highest levels of complex neurosurgical care available anywhere. Because we can now offer these incredibly advanced procedures, we are seeing more referrals come to us from beyond just our community. Patients from a wider area are choosing to receive their neurovascular care with us here at Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital.”
Comprehensive Care for Brain and Spine Trauma and Tumors
In addition to treating neurovascular conditions, the team has developed a robust, multidisciplinary approach to brain tumor care. Dr. Hedayat and Dr. Cheema perform surgical procedures to remove brain tumors and work closely with oncology and radiation specialists to ensure patients receive coordinated, comprehensive treatment all under one roof.
This type of multidisciplinary collaboration is a hallmark of the Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital model. Instead of navigating multiple health systems or traveling to distant facilities, patients benefit from a seamlessly connected team working together on their behalf.
Shekar Kurpad, M.D. Neurosurgeon-Professor
The team’s expertise extends well beyond the brain. Dr. Cheema and Dr. Shekar Kurpad, Neurosurgeon-Professor, Founding Director of the Wisconsin Institute of NeuroScience (WINS), and the new President and CEO of the Medical College of Wisconsin, offer comprehensive spine care. Their services include treatment for spinal tumors, spine reconstruction and stabilization following trauma and fractures, and management of degenerative spinal conditions such as disc herniations and spinal canal narrowing.
A Multidisciplinary Team Readily Assembles for Each Patient
What sets this program apart isn’t just the technology or the credentials- it’s the people and the philosophy behind the care. Experienced advanced practice providers support patients throughout every step of their journey, ensuring continuity of care and providing a familiar, trusted face from the clinic to the hospital and back.

“As a team, we are here all the time,” said Dr. Hedayat. “We have very experienced, high-level ICU care here as well. From the moment we meet a patient, whether in the clinic or the emergency room, it’s important for patients to have this substantial support structure for their complete care.” The team’s approach prioritizes non-surgical options first, resorting to surgical intervention only when it offers the best path to recovery.
The message from the Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital neurosurgery team is clear: you receive exceptional, specialized neurosurgical care right here. From minimally invasive aneurysm treatments to rare cerebral bypass surgeries, from brain tumor removals to complex spine reconstructions, the team is here at Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital- and they are ready.
